Oxygen, heat, moisture and light are the four big enemies of roasted coffee and will cause it to go stale very quickly. Our resealable valved coffee bags allow you to fill the bag with beans, seal it from the atmosphere with the convenient resealable air-tight zip-locker, and then expel any excess air from the bag through the valve. This ensures there is as little oxygen and moisture to oxidise the beans, the lightfast packaging ensures it's always dark, while storing the bag your beans in a cool place (not the fridge) keeps the heat component away. Roasted coffee gives off a lot of carbon dioxide in the 48 hours after roasting, and the valve in the bag will allow this gas to escape from the bag without allowing oxygen to re-enter and oxidise the beans. Storing your beans in a valved bag is the best way to keep them fresh.
These bags can be heat-sealed for longer-term storage if you choose to. Unlike the common black bags, ours are silver in colour meaning they can be easily written on with a permanent texta to identify the contents and the roasting date.
The common practice of storing coffee beans in an airtight jar is flawed as the amount of air in the container will increase as you use the beans, meaning the remaining ones will oxidise a lot quicker. Similarly vacuum containers are not recommended as they tend to suck the volatiles from the beans, things which help make fresh coffee fresh! So valved bags really are the best way to go.
